VideosHelpDutiesThis position reports to the Manager, Science and Technology Office.
The Deputy Manager, Science and Technology Office:
Manages research and systems development programs, projects, and activities in support of NASA mission directorates.
Draws upon an expert knowledge of spacecraft and systems development and program and project management development to direct, lead, and move the organization forward while breaking new ground and simultaneously managing diverse projects/programs.
Exercises the ability to capture synergies across many science and engineering disciplines at the Center and across the agency to optimize organizational efforts.
Maintains a number of collaborative working relationships with external agencies and organizations including the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, international partners, universities, science institutes, and federally funded research and development centers.
With the Manager, STO, is responsible for establishing the overall planning, coordination, and management of STO activities.
Supervises the efforts of subordinate organizations in establishing short-range and long-range plans, defining requirements for and managing assigned programs/projects.
Assists the Manager, STO, in developing programmatic and administrative policy for STO initiatives.
In conjunction with the Manager, STO, exercises authority for planning and directing science and space systems activities in a manner judged to produce the best results in terms of quality, efficiency, economy, and timeliness.
Maintains extensive contacts with the appropriate NASA Associate Administrators and Agency leadership for efficient and effective accomplishment of assigned tasks and with other Centers supporting advanced research and development for highly specialized activities.
Serves as point of contact for STO programs and projects and as spokesperson in space related industry-wide discussions and Center, industry, inter-Center, legislative, and community relations and represents the Center and Agency in providing expert advice in that field to senior managers across a wide spectrum of industrial, government, and academic institutions.

Initial Senior Executive Service (SES) Career appointee is subject to a one-year probationary period.

QualificationsYou must have the skill and ability to perform the duties described above as demonstrated by progressively responsible supervisory/leadership experience, normally obtained over several years by serving in positions at the GS-15 level or equivalent.
To meet the minimum qualification requirements for this position, you MUST address each Executive Core Qualification (ECQ) and Mandatory Technical Qualification (MTQ) separately.
If you fail to do so, your application will be rated ineligible.

Qualifications:
MTQ 1- Demonstrated experience in managing a large, highly-complex organization and a diverse portfolio of science, technology, and engineering research and programs.
MTQ 2- Demonstrated experience communicating technical information, status or decisions with and influencing a wide variety of audiences and stakeholders, including senior and subordinate managers, scientific and technical communities, other government agencies, and/or officials from the executive and/or legislative branches of government.
EducationThis position has a positive education requirement.
